Grrrrr.....

Last week I was at a birthday party for my niece's one-year-old son, and I overheard two women having a conversation about their children, who I guessed were about 6 or 7. "All she wants for Christmas is books!" one said to the other, "So I told her that that's what the library is for... who needs to own books, when you can get them for free at the library?"

ZING! So I tried to put my two cents in, suggesting that although it's great to use the library, there are some books that you just have to HAVE... read, and re-read, and OWN, and they don't break, like most toys, and they're not expensive, or loud, like that Tickle Me Elmo thingy that the baby just opened, etc., etc... and then I heard the sound of crickets chirping, as these two young mothers looked at me blankly.

Oh, well. I'll just trust that her little girl will find a great children's librarian who will keep her reading, and in books, until she can get an allowance, or a job, and buy as many books as she wants!

Oh Leo. I probably would've wanted to kick those mothers. As a former bookseller and librarian, I say get books from everywhere you can get books! They, of course, make the best presents and what better way to teach children the importance of reading than by having books at home, to savor and reread etc. And the library is great because you can't own every book (though you and I may try to do so). Nothing was more fun to me as a child than getting to pick out books at the bookstore and at the library, and look how I turned out. Okay, ranting done. Yeay books. Boo noisy toys.

one of my best friends just told me she was pregnant -- she's not a big reader (she's certainly not anti-reading, but it's just never been something she's loved to do). i already told her i would be responsible for outfitting her baby's first library, and library to grown into, and she thought that was a great idea! hopefully these kids will have someone in their lives who tells them BOOKS ARE IMPORTANT.

okay, merry christmas!!!

I would thank my lucky stars if I were that mother. Imagine having a child who wanted only books for Christmas.

Happy Holidays, Leo!

leo, remember the lady who came into the bookstore one day and was asking how many board books her baby needed, because she already had 4 or something? like, why do babies need board books, or more board books, when she already has SO MANY? silly person.
